What do we talk about when we talk about love? We will see how writers have addressed this question from Shakespeare's day to the present. Writers are likely to include Shakespeare, Austen, Eliot, Flaubert, Graham Greene, Zora Neale Hurston, and Annie Proulx. By reading, discussing, and writing about love, students will become better able to understand and argue about vastly different concepts of love; to assess the virtues and shortcomings of those concepts; to express what might otherwise seem inexpressible; to develop a more nuanced understanding of emotional life; and, ultimately, to experience love in a more reflective and rewarding way.
