Language class: Students in this class will develop fundamental communication skills in Spanish at the intermediate high to advanced level. Classes are taught completely in Spanish and emphasis is placed on oral expression and listening comprehension. Through discussions and exercises centered around socio-cultural topics that define contemporary Spain and Latin America, students will also be able to strengthen their abilities in grammar and vocabulary and have a rewarding experience while navigating a Spanish speaking world. Social justice electives: Students will have the opportunity to practice their Spanish through a social justice lens. As a result, they will develop cultural awareness and expand their points of view based on their new understanding of a language, culture, and community.
The social justice elective will cover a wide range of topics including, stereotypes, identity, race and racism, immigration, and the environment. The course will be taught online through video conferencing. Synchronous sessions will be communicative; most of class time will be focused on speaking through engaging collaborative activities. Asynchronous materials and activities will also be included to facilitate in class learning. The course will use authentic texts, multimedia (films on Canvas, music, short videos, etc.).There is no textbook for this course; the instructor will provide all material.
Students will develop cultural awareness and expand their points of view based on their new understanding of a language, culture, and community. Students will develop their Spanish skills in 4 areas: speaking, listening, reading, and writing
Prerequisites: The course is open to students who will be enrolled in Spanish 4 or 5, or an AP class in Fall 2021
